Mountain hunting in Africa.
Many folks just picture Africa as a flat savanna type country like what you commonly see on national geographic. This couldn’t be further from the truth there are lots of mountains in Africa and a good number of mountain hunting opportunities. There are animals that will live in more mountainous type terrain as maybe the property in South Africa or Namibia is primarily made up of that habitat but the true mountain hunts would be for the Mountain Nyala only found and hunted in Ethiopia , The cape and Hartman’s mountain zebras found in South Africa and in Namibia, The Vaale Rhebok found in South Africa and the Mountain Reedbuck of many verities that occur from South Africa on up into central and west Africa.
You will get great mountain kudu hunting for a variety of Kudu from the Eastern Cape Greater Kudu hunted in the Eastern Cape of South Africa these Kudu inhabit some very steep and rocky terrain in parts of the Eastern Cape to the Southern greater Kudu that offers some great mountain hunting in most of KwaZulu natal. You will have to hunt your Abyssinian Great Kudu in Ethiopia and 9 times out of 10 they are found in the steep foothills full of vegetation also in Ethiopia you can spend a great deal of time looking for big lesser kudu and Menelik’s bushbuck in the steep or rolling hills in the areas they inhabit. Still in South Africa many of the biggest Cape Eland bulls that are hunted in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal can be shot in some incredibly challenging places to get these massive animals out of. The Klipspringer with the name of Rock Jumper in Afrikaans inhabit to their name’s sake very rocky terrain and will often be hunted in very steep canyons or rocky nobs you will find the Klipspringer throughout most African countries in the steep rocky habitat. I hunted in Zambia’s Luangwa valley and just as the name implies it’s a valley with very steep and tall mountains around it I’m sure there was game up in the mountains especially where water was available but we never had to get into that country to look for any game. Zimbabwe is full of mountains having hence the Zambeze escarpment. Tanzania has some great mountain hunting in the Rungwa game reserve as well as in Masiland where you hunt what many refer to as the mountain buffalo and the Masai Bushbuck. You could spend much of your lifetime traveling the dark continent in search of the mountainous habitat that it holds in its hunting areas, along with the game that call each area home. So don’t get stuck that Africa is all flat or that its nothing but thick thorn brush vegetation that couldn’t be further from the truth.
