I gave away a Cape Buffalo hunt in 2021 and Devin was the lucky winner. Africa’s Cape buffalo is the most sought after of the big five for a number of reasons. Numbers, area diversity, and price make up the main reasons. And with the buffalo being the most sought after it also means the highest face to face encounters with them. 9 times out of 10 the reason a buffalo charges is it has been wounded and you are following him up at the ready, but there still is that chance when hunting where buffalo live that you encounter one at the wrong place wrong time and have an unaware unprovoked charge. Last month while in South Africa I went to experience my first South Africa cape buffalo hunt. While I knew it wouldn’t live up to the experiences I’ve had in the wilds of Tanzania, Zambia and the Caprivi I didn’t expect to get the experience we did, with a 100% unprovoked charge from a bull we had no idea was bedded right where we wanted to sit and glass. In the modern-day safari world, there had been talk that the big 5 wasn’t complete with a White Rhino or with a darted Rhino. I don’t believe in this as with a great conservation success story 1. Southern Africa white Rhino population has increased in part from these great recourses of revenue and the land and habitat provided to them from hunting. “African authorities have estimated that there were 23,290 rhinos across the continent at the end of 2022, 5.2% more than in 2021” 2. When the “Green Hunting” (darting) of these white rhinos was very popular and legal it gave a outdoorsman or woman a chance to be a part of a conservation effort and count this towards one of their big 5. However, while on this trip just as it was ending, we had an opportunity to do what most consider as the classic big 5 and that is hunting a Black Rhino. This old bull was blind in one eye and had been outcast from the breeding herd with the younger now more dominate male severely wounding him. They had done vet work on this bull three times prior but now he was getting old, very aggressive and instead of him hurting someone or being killed by a younger bull the property wanted to hunt him and put the money back into the ever-growing population on the property and to help drive more up keep and anti-poaching initiatives Visit Sims Safaris to help you learn more about hunting world wide with a primary focus on the great continent of Africa.
